The
town's name derives from 'Mire' to gaze at the hill 'Mont'.
The old royal Bastide town, Miramont de Lauzun, was founded
in 1278, by Edouard I on the duke of Lauzun's land, on the
site of one of the Templier's refuge and surveillance post.
Its arches, many of which are missing, are supported by
very old pillars on stone crepidomas.
In 1453, at the end of the Hundred-year war, the king, Charles
VIII, granted Miramont the statute of Bastide town.
Isidore
Soussial, returning from a stay to Tunisia, in 1848, he
created the "Kroumir", a slipper in thin sheepskin
worn as clog in the countryside. In approximately 1880,
his son Joseph manufactured the item. This was a family
business and a cottage industry grew, and the number of
clog makers or cobblers soared with more than 20 that made
the slippers. At the beginning of the 20 century the modern
shoes making factories were established for which Miramont
is renowned.
Anyone visiting Miramont can take a tour of the Ruelles
(alleyways), which have are full of historical interest.
Accompanying literature can be obtained from the Office
de Tourisme.
